Scientific Linux rolls out live CD/DVD update
Oct. 27, 2006

The Scientific Linux project today released a set of live CDs and DVDs of the latest version of their Red Hat-based distribution, v4.4, for both i386 and x86_64 architectures. The live CD/DVD, featuring a 2.6.9 kernel and the GNOME desktop environment, can also boot from a USB port, the team said.

The U.S. and Swiss-based Scientific Linux (SL) project was developed by Fermilab, CERN, and various other labs and universities around the world. Its primary purpose is to reduce duplicated effort of the labs and to have a common install base for the various experimenters, the project said.

Key updates to Scientific Linux 4.4, according to the team, include:
  • updated Unionfs to 1.1.5, Squashfs to 3.1-r2, NVIDIA driver to 1.0-8776
  • added SMP kernel to live CD/DVD (support for Dual-Core and multiprocessor systems)
  • added r1000 and ipw3945 drivers
  • added more packages to the live DVD
  • added boot options: nopasswd, serviceon, serviceoff
  • live CD/DVD now runs with native Scientific Linux 4 kernel (no more special live CD kernel)
The base SL distribution is basically Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), recompiled from source. The project's main goal is to have everything compatible with RHEL, with only a few minor additions or changes, the project said. Examples of items that were added are Pine and OpenAFS.

Some standard features, most of which are not the latest versions, include:
  • GAIM 1.5.0 messenger
  • SendMail 8.13.1 email client
  • GIMP 2.0.5 graphics editor
  • OpenOffice.org 1.1.5
  • SeaMonkey 1.0.5 browser, email, newsgroup client
SL's secondary goal is to allow easy customization for a site without disturbing the Scientific Linux base. Various labs are able to add their own modifications to their own site areas.

You can download the 699MB live CD iso for i386 here, and the live CD for x86_64 here (direct links to iso files).

Earlier versions can be found at the project's main download site, here.
