| Damn Small Linux releases version 3.1 |
Nov. 30, 2006
The Damn Small Linux project team released an update to its aptly named operating system today. DSL v3.1 sports a 2.4.26 kernel and the Fluxbox window manager in a -- shall we say -- relatively tiny package.
Despite its minuscule size (50 MB), DSL crams a lot of functionality into an easy-to-use desktop.
Key new features in v3.1, according to the team, include:- converted 54 Lua and Lua/Fltk programs to Lua 5.1.1 Fltk 1.1 via MurgaLua interface
- updated SQLite to 3.3.6
- made Unionfs the default boot
- improved mount tool for "after boot" pen drive support
- updated hard drive install for consistent fstab
- new boot option 'dosswapfile' to auto-scan or specify DOS swap file
- new boot option 'fuse' to load upon boot the FUSE file system
- improved Antiword fonts
DSL has a nearly complete desktop that includes XMMS (MP3, and MPEG), an FTP client, links-hacked web browser, spreadsheet, email, spellcheck (U.S. English), word processor, and three editors (Nedit, nVi, Zile [emacs clone]).
It also includes Xpdf, Worker (a file manager), Naim (AIM, ICQ, IRC), VNCviwer, SSH/SCP server and client, DHCP client, PPP, PPPoE, a web server, calculator, system monitoring apps, and USB support.
"Soon it will have PCMCIA support as well," the team said in the release announcement. "If you like Damn Small Linux, you can install it on your hard drive, and because all the applications are small and light, it makes a very good choice for older hardware."
You can download the 50 MB iso image from the project's website, here or directly from this FTP link (direct link to iso file).
