"Reveal" wins top honors in Firefox extensions contest
Mar. 03, 2006

Mozilla Corp. has announced the winners of its Extend Firefox Contest, which it introduced last fall at the v1.5 launch. Web developer Michael Wu snagged the Grand Prize Category's "Best New Extension Overall" with Reveal, which adds page thumbnails to Firefox session histories. Reveal was also awarded "Best User Experience."

Eleven winners were selected in all from "just over 200 entries," Mozilla vice president of products Chris Beard told DesktopLinux.com.

Mozilla launched the contest Nov. 29 to encourage a new wave of extension development for the browser and showcase the talents of Firefox extension authors, Beard said. A panel of expert judges picked the winners from the submissions received at the Mozilla Developer Center Web site. The winning add-ons bring new capabilities to Firefox 1.5 and also include several updates to popular Firefox 1.0 extensions, Beard added.

"A huge thanks goes out to all of the Extend Firefox participants, judges and sponsors, who together made the contest a great success," Beard said. "It was a hard decision to narrow down the winners, considering the creativity and ingenuity on display."

The next major release of Firefox -- most probably the 2.0 version -- isn't expected until at least the end of the year.
