Aug. 06, 2004
Lycoris will ship its Linux-based desktop in China and Taiwan as part of a strategic partnership announced late Thursday. As a result of the agreement, Lycoris Desktop/LX 1.4 and Desktop/LX Tablet Edition will be available in Asia to consumers, businesses, and schools.
"During our first month distributing Lycoris Desktop/LX we were able to enter into relationships with a full 50% of the world's Tablet PC OEM manufacturers," said Lycoris partner Charlie Paglee, CEO of Hanzen Corp. He added that Lycoris helps system makers lower manufacturing costs while maintaining a user interface consumers are already familiar with."
Desktop/LX 1.4 is based on KDE 3.2.3, Bitstream's btX2 font rendering technology, and Lycoris's newly introduced Advanced Application Integration Infrastructure. The latter -- also called AI-squared -- allows software vendors to integrate their products with Desktop/LX without having to make any changes to their existing code base, according to Lycoris. Desktop/LX Tablet Edition features a virtual keyboard, touch screen drivers, and USB CD-ROM installation enhancements.
Linux is gaining growing acceptance in Asia. Last year China's vice minister of the Information Industry, Gou Zhongwen, said the country is building their domestic software industry around Linux.
Lycoris's tablet version began shipping on the Toshiba De-Tablet last year, based on the Toshiba Portege tablet platform.
