May 08, 2008
Linspire has upgraded its CNR.com (Click'N'Run) download site for Linux software to support the Ubuntu-based, consumer-friendly Linux Mint distribution. CNR.com will also add a Linux version of Weatherbug's weather service, which offers live, local weather information and severe weather alerts.

With the new Linux Mint support, says Linspire, CNR.com now supports five major Linux distros, including Freespire 2.0, Kubuntu 7.04 and 7.10, Ubuntu 7.04, 7.10, and 8.04 (32bit), and Linspire's own Linspire 6.0. To gain access to the free CNR Service, says the company, Linux Mint 4.0 users can install the free, recently upgraded CNR Client, available at CNR.com.
Released last Fall, Mint 4.0 is a more multimedia-rich, consumer-friendly version of Ubuntu 7.10. Built on top of the 2.6.22 Linux kernel, it offers a Gnome 2.20 interface, but there is also a KDE version. A community Linux distribution that includes some proprietary elements, Mint 4.0 uses Amarok, Totem, and Mplayer to display multimedia content, but also supports MP3, Flash, Windows Media, and encrypted DVD playback support. Bundled applications include OpenOffice 2.3, Thunderbird 2.0.0.6, and Firefox 2.0.0.6.

WeatherBug provides access to severe weather alerts, as well as local temperatures, wind speed, radar, and forecasts from WeatherBug's own international network of weather stations and cameras.
According to WeatherBug, its service is delivered to "millions of consumers" via the Internet and mobile devices. Other customers are said to include 100 state and local government agencies including the National Weather Service, as well as schools, businesses, and 80 broadcast TV stations. With WeatherBug for Linux, the company says it hopes to expand beyond its installed base of three million active widgets, which are primarily deployed on OS X and Windows.
Linspire launched CNR.com in 2002 with the aim of allowing desktop Linux users to find, install, uninstall, manage, and update thousands of software programs on their Linspire-based Linux computers. The site includes dozens of commercial Linux software titles for sale, such as Sun Microsystems' StarOffice, Parallels Workstation, Virtual Bridges' Win4Lin, CodeWeavers' CrossOver Office, and TransGaming Technologies' Cedega.
Stated Clement Lefebvre, Lead Developer at Linux Mint, "CNR makes it easy to install commercial software and purchase services which aren't available via the Linux Mint Software Portal or the Debian package manager. Support for Linux Mint 5 Elyssa will follow shortly."
Stated Chris Sloop, CTO at WeatherBug, "Working with Linspire and CNR.com, we can now make our application available to a large audience of Linux users via a platform that makes it very easy to find and download our application."
