Novell ZENworks rolls out Red Carpet to reduce IT costs
Jun. 25, 2004

Due out Monday, Novell's ZENworks 6.5 helps IT staff consolidate resources and reduce the cost of managing Linux and other operating systems in the enterprise. ZENworks Linux Management, formerly Ximian's Red Carpet Enterprise, provides secure, scalable and centralized management of SuSE and Red Hat Linux server and desktop systems.

ZENworks provides patch management capabilities, dependency, and conflict resolution for software packages and updates from public and private sources, including updates from Novell, SuSE, Red Hat, and other third-party vendors.

IDC senior analyst Fred Broussard said, "Most organizations have a heterogeneous environment and therefore require a complete systems management solution that supports the entire lifecycle of desktops, servers and handhelds across multiple platforms."

Assigning each each resource an identity, administrators use policies to automate network administration. This helps organizations that are migrating to Linux manage Windows or NetWare systems, too.

Independent testing by KeyLabs scored Novell ZENworks 6.5 highest overall in a comparative analysis against the latest systems management software from Microsoft, Altiris, and LANDesk. All four suites were ranked for quality and ease of use, according to the report. Novell received the top grade in 17 of the 35 categories and ranked second in eight others. Read the full report from Key Labs.

Said KeyLabs CTO Eric Bowden, "Novell ZENworks 6.5 received the highest overall grade after a series of test cases that accurately represent real-life scenarios for systems management evaluation. ZENworks 6.5 scored particularly well in software distribution and managed mobility and across all features for quality."

ZENworks 6.5 will be available beginning on Monday for US $130 per user. A patch management subscription is also available for an additional fee. Customers can also purchase the individual components for managing desktops, servers, and handhelds.

Novell is offering customers a 50 percent discount on ZENworks 6.5 when migrating from any major competitor including LANDesk, Altiris, Novadigm, Microsoft SMS, Tivoli, ON Technology, Marimba, or CA Unicenter, or from a previous ZENworks product. Details are here.

Since Novell launched the public beta of ZENworks, they have had more than 15,000 downloads, reports the company.
