| Dell to offer SuSE Linux on servers |
Oct. 28, 2004
Dell has announced that it will ship Novell's SuSE Enterprise Server 9 on its single- and dual-processor line of PowerEdge servers. SuSE Linux already ships on IBM and HP servers and desktop PCs, and Dell's servers already ship with Novell's Netware products.
Dell says Novell's SuSE Linux will join Red Hat Linux as an option for enterprises worldwide. Red Hat has long dominated the US market for Linux, with 80 percent market share according to Gartner, who now projects that Red Hat will fall to 60 percent. SuSE Linux, now owned by Novell, is beginning to make headway in the US. A recent survey by the Yankee Group reports SuSE's US market share at around 28 percent, vs. Red Hat at 59 percent.
Yesterday, Novell joined HP in a German initiative to support IT migrations to Linux desktops and servers in local German governments. Called "Linux Kommunale," the initiative combines HP's hardware along with Novell's SuSE Enterprise Server 9, Linux desktop, and management tools. The program offers no-interest financing on IT equipment purchases by German government agencies.
Dell and Novell will provide select models of Poweredge servers for US $175 per single CPU maintenance subscription, and US $269 for a dual CPU subscription. The servers will begin shipping in December, according to Dell.
