| SuSE 9.3 continues to impress |
May 19, 2005
Lauded as solid, slick, and cutting edge, Novell Inc.'s SuSE 9.3 has numerous reviewers singing its praise. At Linuxplanet.com this week, Bill von Hagen adds his voice to the choir.
Like eWEEK Labs reviewer, Jason Brooks, von Hagen found SuSE 9.3 to be an excellent distribution.
Installing SuSE 9.3 on a "clean P4 machine" along with VMware 5.0 was easy -- "In a nutshell, it just works," von Hagen writes. The YaST (Yet another System Tool) installer automated the process, while allowing von Hagen to select as few or as many packages as he wished. Von Hagen reports that software with proprietary licenses, like Macromedia's Flash Player, triggers license dialogue boxes. The license agreements must be accepted for the software to install -- a feature Open Source devotees may or may not appreciate.
Also, like eWEEK Labs, von Hagen reports that automatic hardware support works flawlessly without tedious tweaking, even on laptops.
Von Hagen did encounter a few problems. SuSE 9.3 on VMware seemed reluctant to shut down, and von Hagen reports having to go through the process twice. Also, he encountered a "bizarre problem," whereby display resolution configuration tweaks caused SuSE to switch from kdm to the X Window equivalent, xdm. Von Hagen was able to find a solution for this, which he explains thoroughly.
