| SoftMaker Office 2006 goes into beta |
Nov. 01, 2006
German software vendor SoftMaker announced earlier this week that it has ported its office suite to Linux and FreeBSD. SoftMaker Office 2006 includes updates to both TextMaker and PlanMaker, two popular stand-alone applications that are combined into one office suite, according to the company.
SoftMaker Office 2006 for Windows debuted in September; the versions for Linux and FreeBSD are now in public beta testing. SoftMaker Office offers a cost-effective compatible, and competitive package for those looking for alternatives to the traditional Office application suites, the company said.
SoftMaker Office 2006 runs on all "modern" Linux versions for PCs, and on FreeBSD 5.2 or higher, according to the company.
The company describes TextMaker 2006 as a powerful word processor that is compatible with most word processing formats, including all versions of Microsoft Word. PlanMaker 2006, meanwhile, is described as a feature-rich spreadsheet application that is compatible with Microsoft Excel. OpenOffice.org and OpenDocument formats are supported by both applications.
Beta versions of SoftMaker Office 2006 for Linux and FreeBSD are now available as free downloads here.
The completed software will be priced at $69.95 (EUR 69.95), the company said.
