| Linux distro guide helps new users figure out what's what |
Jun. 21, 2005
There are so many distros, and so many opinions about which is the best, it's hard for even a Linux veteran to keep them all straight. To help cut through the clutter, Tipmonkies.com has compiled a brief overview of the major distributions and their more noteworthy derivatives.
A work in progress, "The Beginner's Guide to Linux Distros" identifies two major branches of Linux -- Red Hat / RPM (Red Hat Package Manager), and Debian/dpkg based -- as well as an "other" category that includes Slackware and Gentoo. The guide gives brief histories, as well as a few observations on the strengths and weaknesses, of each covered distribution.
