| AMD, Real join San Diego desktop Linux confab |

AMD and RealNetworks have signed on as sponsors of the upcoming Desktop Summit to be held in San Diego, Calif., February 9-11. This year's Summit has added a pair of half-day sessions devoted to the OpenOffice and Mozilla open source software projects.
Michael Robertson, CEO of event organizer Linspire, CEO of SIPphone.com, and founder and "mastermind" of MP3.com, will lead off with the welcoming keynote, titled "From Radical to Practical." Other keynote talks will be delivered by Mitch Kapor, founder of the Mozilla Foundation, the creator of Lotus 1-2-3, founder of the Open Source Applications Foundation, and a well known blogger; and by RealNetworks CEO Rob Glaser. Kapor's talk is titled "Open Source Democracy: What Politics Can Learn from Technology," while Glaser's is on the topic, "Digital Media on the Desktop: Where We Are and What Is Next."
Rounding out the keynotes is a talk by preeminent blogger and Linux Journal business editor Doc Searls, on the topic of Linux in business.
Other featured talks during the Summit include: - "Shaking up the Bureaucrats: How to bring Linux to the Office"
- "Sneaking Linux-Powered Products into Schools... Through the Back Door"
- "Making Linux a Business Desktop: A Scorecard"
- "But What Do People Do With Their PCs at Work?"
The OpenOffice.org half-day session, dubbed "OooRegiCon," boasts a talk by Sun Microsystems chief technology evangelist Simon Phipps. Topics covered in the OO will session range from building databases to technical writing, and will include a look at the impact of standards such as OASIS.
Mozilla's half-day session will lead off with an introduction to Mozilla by the project's general manager, Mitchell Baker, and will present live demonstrations of Mozilla sub-projects Firefox, Thunderbird, and more. Talks in the Mozilla session will include "Extending Mozilla and Firing up Firefox," and "Lightning Strikes: A first look at Outlook Challenger Lightning."
