Oct. 13, 2004
Three months ahead of schedule, NTT Data Corporation and VA Linux Systems Japan K.K. have announced the release of their joint Linux fault analysis tool, the Mini Kernel Dump. The project goals include increasing the reliability of Linux in the enterprise.
Tentatively called Linaccident, the tool is designed to accurately collect and analyze data when a computer system that uses Linux crashes or otherwise malfunctions. NTT Data says it plans to use Linaccident to verify and combine various open source software that can be used in the construction of diverse types of systems. The company reports that it is developing Prossione, a new full-range open source solution including system development using open source software, maintenance support, and middleware support.
In a statement, Tetsuya Ueda, president and CEO at VA Linux, said that "the release of Mini Kernel Dump will strengthen the reliability of Linux-based system greatly, and we are sure that even more adaptation of Linux-based solutions will be materialized soon in the enterprise market."
VA Linux teamed with NTT last May on the open source research project.
The current version of Mini Kernel Dump is available under the GPL and operates on IA-32. Project plans include support for x86-64 and IA-64 systems.
