PixExcel Ltd. this week released Update 7 of Pie Box Enterprise Linux 3. The GNOME-based Linux desktop is aimed at users who need a stable OS with a long lifespan but don't want an expensive bundled support contract, spokesman Nigel Jewell said.
Pie Box Linux is derived from open-source software with only four packages modified in order to replace trademarks and logos with its own. Key standard features of Pie Box Enterprise Linux 3 include the Linux 2.4 kernel, GNOME, Apache 2, Samba 3, and Logical Volume Manager, the company said.
Update 7 includes the following enhancements, according to the project team:- Improved support for NUMA architectures (Non-Uniform Memory Access)
- Enhanced system tools, including the addition of OpenIPMI (Intelligent Platform Management Interface) userspace tools
- Driver updates, including aacraid, e1000, emulex, fusion, ipmi, megaraid2, tg3, SATA support, lpfc, serverworks, siimage, aic7xxx
- Driver additions, including bnx2, dell_rbu and megaraid_sas
- Security updates, bug fixes, and feature enhancements to numerous system packages
PixExcel, based in the United Kingdom, recognized the demand for enterprise quality Linux software that does not come bundled with an expensive support contract, Jewell said. This led to the release of Pie Box Enterprise Linux 3 AS in April 2004.
Since then, PixExcel has been supplying a growing client base, ranging from the home enthusiast to "multi-million-pound" corporations, Jewell said.
You can download Pie Box Linux here. Instructions are included.
Retrieving Pie Box updates requires having a modified version of the yum client and a subscription key. The subscription key is supplied by email when users purchase one of the Pie Box subscription options. Combined, the modified version of yum and the subscription key allow Pie Box to authenticate connections and monitor use, the company said.
