Jul. 14, 2004
Xandros has announced that Canada's Acadia University has selected the Xandros Desktop Operating System (OS) as the Linux offering for its undergraduate program. The Nova Scotia-based facility, credited as the first university in Canada to integrate notebook computers into the curriculum, is offering a customized version of Xandros on Dell D600 laptops through a three year program that is expected to outfit 9,000 laptops to students and faculty.
Acadia students use notebook computers to complete their coursework and participate in classes, according to President and Vice-Chancellor of Acadia University, Dr. Gail Dinter-Gottlieb. They receive Dell Latitude D600 notebooks for use during the academic year.
Xandros has certified its OS on the Dell D600 laptop, including the detection and operation of wireless network cards and other standard peripherals.
Earlier this year, Xandros teamed with San Jose, CA-based LinuxCertified on a line of Linux laptops targeting North American universities. These Intel-based systems, outfitted with a Centrino chip, offer a Linux desktop with developer tools for students, educators, researchers, and developers.
Tokyo-based Waseda University selected "Turbolinux 10 Desktop" (10D) for the Department of Computer Science's Java programming courses that were offered this Spring.
