Opera named top web browser of 2004 by PCWorld
Jun. 04, 2004

The US edition of PC World has selected Opera as the "best Web browser" for 2004 in its annual 'World Class Awards.'

Opera 7.23 is lauded by the top tech magazine for its innovative features calling it " . . . a fleet-footed package that provides innovative ways to view, analyze, and store Web pages. Opera's security options are strong and easy to configure."

Opera CEO Jon S. von Tetzchner said in a statement, "The recognition confirms the trend we are seeing on desktop: more and more users are tired of the ageing Internet Explorer, and are looking to get more out of the Internet. For these users Opera offers a fast, feature-rich alternative that is both fun and more
productive."

PC World's editors make their selections based on exemplary usability, design, innovation, features, performance, and value from a reliable manufacturer, according to the program guidelines. A full list of PCWorld's "Best of 2004" products are available here.

Opera is now available for Linux, Windows, Mac, FreeBSD and Solaris. The release also offers an e-mailer, newsreader, IRC-compatible chat client, contact database, support for RSS newsfeeds and more features in a small footprint, just 3.5 MB. It is available, with sponsored ads, download. Users can register their copy and receive 6 months free use of Opera Web Mail Premium for USD $30 with support and no ads.

The company announced that 10 million copies its Opera web browser had been downloaded from its website by August of 2003, setting a company record in that year.
