Xandros launches Xandros Desktop 1.0 beta program!
Jan. 31, 2002

New York; LinuxWorld -- (press release excerpt) -- Xandros announced today the launch of its first Beta Program designed to finalize the stability and usability of Xandros Desktop 1.0. The program is being conducted in an effort to garner insight from potential users and aid the Xandros product development team in finalizing the product for distribution. The full release of Xandros Desktop 1.0 is slated for May 2002.

Linux users interested in participating in the Beta Test Program should visit the Xandros website beta area. Potential users will be asked to answer a short questionnaire about their level of Linux experience, system resources, and geographic location. Xandros will select a diverse group of approximately 200 users from the completed questionnaires.

"We are excited to be nearing the final development phase of our first release - Xandros Desktop 1.0," said Mike Bego, President of Xandros. "The input that we gain from our Beta test group will help us ensure that the product is easy-to-use, feature-rich and ready for the desktop user."

The Beta Test Program is being conducted in two phases, the first phase running through March 15, 2002, and the second beginning shortly thereafter. The goal of the first phase is to finalize the hardware requirements and key elements of the installation. Using a Bugzilla account, Beta testers will log bugs and communicate directly with the Xandros product development team. Xandros will use the feedback to improve the product and plans to release a second Beta for a final round of testing.

"Since Xandros purchased the award-winning Corel Linux OS in August, our team has been working to advance its features and functionality and to update the operating system and key applications with the latest versions of the Kernel, Debian and KDE," said Ming Poon, Vice President Product Development. "Xandros is committed to delivering a complete product that will meet the demands of the desktop Linux user."

The Xandros Desktop Beta 1 is Debian-based and includes the 2.4.16 Linux Kernel, KDE 2.2.2, and many Xandros enhancements, such as Windows networking interoperability, easy to use control panels, a connection Wizard, a printer Wizard and the Xandros File Manager.
