Linux Journal’s new columnist Tom Adelstein reports on government IT successes using Linux. Adelstein examines efforts to improve interoperability as Linux adoption is receiving support throughout many sectors of the US government. As requirements from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) call for standards, gaining support and cooperation among state agencies has been a challenge, notes Adelstein.
The article demonstrates this resistance, and notes that states often maintain independent systems due to civil right issues and/or privacy laws that seem to prohibit the practice of cooperation. Adelstein offers insight, and details projects that could facilitate a move toward interoperability.
