| SimplyMepis 6.0 Beta 2 ready for testing |
May 06, 2006
Mepis LLC on May 4 announced the Beta 2 release of SimplyMepis 6.0, the second of two planned betas before the final version is to launch around June 1, according to Mepis founder and chief maintainer Warren Woodford.
Beta 2 offers a 2.6.15.6 kernel based on Ubuntu kernel version 2.6.15. Mepis kernels are source-identical with Ubuntu kernels, but the configurations are tweaked to accommodate specific Mepis requirements, Woodford said.
The 6.0-beta 2 bootable/installable CD includes more than 900 packages and features OpenOffice 2.0.2, Firefox 1.5.0.1, Thunderbird 1.5, Amarok 1.3.9, and JBidWatcher 1.0. Over 15,000 additional packages are available for installation from the Mepis and Ubuntu package pools.
"Starting with this release, we are providing a full set of commercial-grade Mepis kernel packages for the 386, 686, and k7 flavors of i386," Woodford said. "Problems with CUPS recognizing all-in-one and parallel printers have been handled. The kernel and system configuration has been tested and verified with Oracle Database 10g Express Edition. Recently, there have been important updates to Firefox, OpenOffice.org, KDE, HP printer support, X.Org, and the kernel."
The ISO image is available for download and testing in the Mepis "testing" subdirectory at the Mepis Subscriber's Site and public mirrors. Users are requested to send feedback to dev@mepis.org
