| Scalix rolls small-biz version of enterprise email/calendaring |
Apr. 04, 2006
Scalix, which makes email/calendaring software for Linux, Tuesday introduced its Small Business Edition, a lower-cost version of its Enterprise Edition aimed at small businesses. The new version offers many of the same features found in the company's flagship Enterprise Edition, Scalix said, but at a lower price for small organizations.
Like Scalix Enterprise Edition, Small Business Edition includes third-party support for Microsoft Outlook and Scalix Web Access (SWA), the Scalix's "fully featured" AJAX-based web email client that combines the features of desktop email with that of a browser. SWA is cross-browser and cross-platform, supporting Internet Explorer, Firefox and Mozilla running on Linux, Windows, Macintosh, and Unix, Scalix said.
Additionally, the package provides native support for Novell Evolution -- enabling "full-function" email and calendaring on Linux desktops, according to the company.
Other listed key features include:- Unlimited POP/IMAP email access
- GUI and command line administration
- Full group calendaring and scheduling
- An optional Scalix Wireless Solution that supports Blackberry, Treo, and Smartphone users.
Small Business Edition differs from Enterprise Edition only in that it is a single-server version of Scalix instead of multi-server, and it does not include other features typically required in larger businesses, such as support for five-nines (99.999 percent) availability, the company said.
Small Business Edition was developed in large part due to the popularity of Scalix Community Edition, which has been downloaded more than 20,000 times since it was launched six months ago, the company said.
"A major benefit of Scalix has always been that it can significantly lower the total cost of ownership of organizational messaging," said Glenn Winokur, Scalix's chief executive officer.
Pricing and availability
Small Business Edition is available immediately and is priced at $995 for the first 50 users, Scalix said. The package includes a one-year software subscription service and installation support. Each additional group of 25 users is $1,495.
