| EU public administrators urged to evaluate OpenOffice |
Nov. 17, 2004
Open Forum Europe (OFE) has issued a white paper that endorses the Open Document Format initiative. The group's mission is to expand the use of Linux in business. OFE advocates open standards and urges public administrations across Europe to evaluate the OASIS OpenOffice XML format.
OFE advocates the use of open formats and urges software vendors to define the Open Document Format as a user default in software used by public administrations, according to the white paper.
The OFE paper discusses the opennesss of PDF through a freely available reader that runs on multiple operating systems including Linux, Mac OSX, Solaris, and Windows. OSF notes that the capability to create PDF files is integrated directly within Microsoft Office and OpenOffice office suites, making PDF a defacto standard for document content delivery. PDFs offers file access to users who might not otherwise have access to a highly speciaized software.
