Apr. 25, 2006
Mozilla's SeaMonkey project, successor to the venerable Mozilla Application Suite (which, in turn, succeeded the even older Netscape desktop suite), which combines browser, email, newsgroups, IRC chat, and HTML editing capabilities in a single application, has released version 1.0.1.
The new edition is an upgrade from the inaugural version, which debuted in January.
The new SeaMonkey browser includes the following features, according to the project team:- tabbed browsing, to allow several open pages at once with one click.
- popup blocker
- image manager to remove offensive images or speed up the rendering of web sites
- "Find As You Type" allows user to jump from link to link or to find a word or phrase within a page
- advanced security settings
- password, download, and cookie managers
- multi-language and multi-platform support
The v1.0.1 mail client also contains junk mail controls, customizable mail labels (color code email to help prioritize), and multiple account support (to helps manage mail from different accounts through one interface).
The powerful Composer HTML editor features dynamic image and table resizing, quick insert and delete of table cells, improved CSS support, and support for positioned layers, the team said.
SeaMonkey Messenger includes enterprise-ready features such as S/MIME, return receipts, Address Books, LDAP support, and digital signing.
The SeaMonkey project is an open source community effort to deliver production-quality releases of code derived from the application formerly known as Mozilla Application Suite, Mozilla said.
"Whereas the main focus of the Mozilla Foundation is on Mozilla Firefox and Mozilla Thunderbird, our group of dedicated volunteers works to ensure that you can have 'everything but the kitchen sink' -- and have it stable enough for corporate use," a Mozilla spokesperson said in the release announcement.
