| Scientific Linux live CD/DVD previews RH5 |
Jan. 31, 2007
A preview of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, which won't be released for about a month, is available via the latest Scientific Linux 5 (SL5) alpha live CD/DVD, released this week. Built from source packages for RHEL 5, SL5 sports a 2.6.18 kernel and either the KDE or GNOME desktops.
On the SL5 alpha live DVD, all client/workstation RPMs are installed and GNOME is the default desktop. On the SL5 alpha live CD, KDE is the default desktop. "For the moment there are no 64-bit SL5 alpha live CD/DVD available," the team said in the release announcement.
The base SL distribution is essentially Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), recompiled from source. The project's main goal is to have everything compatible with RHEL, with only a few minor additions or changes.
Key new features in this release, according to the team, include: - X.Org 7.1 window manager
- KDE 3.5.4 desktop
- GIMP 2.2.13 graphics editor
- Evolution 2.8.0 information manager
- OpenOffice.org 2.0.4 office suite
- Firefox 1.5.0.8 browser
- GNOME 2.16.0 desktop (DVD only)
The U.S.- and Swiss-based Scientific Linux (SL) project was developed by Fermilab, CERN, and various other labs and universities around the world. Its primary purpose is to reduce duplicated effort of the labs and to have a common install base for the various experimenters, the project said.
