Vector Linux Tuesday announced that a new development LiveCD version of its 5.1 Standard Edition (RC 1) is now available for download from the project's FTP site and various mirrors. The distro includes a 2.6.15 kernel, Firefox 1.5, OpenOffice.org 2.0, and a choice of three window managers, among other features.
"We have set up 'initng', and added an option in the boot menu so anyone that would like to see what 'initng' is like on VectorLinux can try it out," a VectorLinux spokesman said in the release announcement.
VectorLinux, derived from the Slackware core, is a small, fast, Linux operating system for x86-based PC-style computers. The creators had a three-part goal: "Keep it simple, keep it small, and let the end user decide what their operating system is going to be," the project says on its website.
Key enhancements in the LiveCD RC1 from the 5.1 Standard version, according to the project, include:- 2.6.15.3 kernel
- Firefox 1.5.0.1
- Ndiswrapper 1.9
- OpenOffice.org 2.0
- udev 071
- an all-new installer.
VectorLinux also gives users a choice of three lightweight window managers -- IceWM, Xfce4, and fluxbox.
You can download the free 616 MB LiveCD iso here.
In addition to the standard edition, a deluxe version ($27) available from the online VectorLinux CD store, adds KDE, OpenOffice 2.0, and FreeRock Gnome (as a bonus CD) to the package.
