| LinuxCentral: DemoLinux 3.0.1 is Now Shipping |
Apr. 10, 2002
LinuxCentral has announced the arrival of the latest version of DemoLinux. The DemoLinux CD allows you to use Linux without installation, disk partitioning or other complex manipulation. This CD does not install Linux on the hard disk, but allows the user to preview the distribution at length before proceeding with a full installation.
Among various improvements, version 3.0 now introduces the Xvesa X server, remplacing the framebuffer used before, which depended on VESA 2.0 cards. It now handles PCI sound cards, Lucent winmodems, Reiserfs version 3.5.x, certain USB peripherals and several other 2.2.18 kernel devices. As for version 2.0, DemoLinux 3 heavily uses a transparent compression schema that allows to store over a gigabyte of applications, including GNOME and KDE. The compression code has been fixed and now it is faster and more reliable. Popular tools, such as ssh (which is downloaded on the fly and not pre-installed, due to legal reasons), gpart, dump etc, as well as a version of TeXmacs are now included.
The CD is available for $2.95 US from Linuxcentral.com.
