| French company offers MandrakeLinux laptop for sub-750 euros |
Oct. 18, 2004
A small French company has started shipping Mandrake 10 on laptops for under 750 € (euros). Errex says it hopes its offering helps open source Linux gain a wider audience and that it is committed to offering more open source technologies in the future.
The 1200X-ERX laptop is based on an AMD Athlon Mobile 2000+ (or optional 2600+ processor), has 256MB DDR memory, a 20GB hard drive, and a 15-inch TFT XGA screen. The notebook supports PCMCIA, hosts a Firewire port, and has a DVD reader/writer. The unit is covered by 2 year warrranty.
Errex says it teamed with Maxdata to offer a "quality Linux notebook" to consumers. The company notes that the laptops are offered by other vendors with Windows preloaded, but that it passes on savings to customers by eliminating Microsoft licensing fees.
Since emerging from bankruptcy earlier this year, Mandrakesoft has introduced Mandrake PCs from French retailer Carrefour, low cost business laptops from HP with Mandrake preloaded, and supplies the software shipped on an innovative new 4-user computer from HP that targets developing nations.
