During a Comdex keynote, Sun CEO Scott McNealy rolled out two servers powered by Advanced Micro Devices' Opteron chip and announced a deal with the China Standard Software Co. (CSSC) consortium -- a group of companies supported by the Chinese government, reports Stephen Shankland at CNet.
Under the agreement, McNealy said that the organization will use Sun's Linux desktop software Java Desktop System, formerly called Project Mad Hatter. He went on to quantify the deal at, "between a half million and a million desktops in 2004 .... It makes us instantaneously the No. 1 Linux desktop player on the planet."
