Jan. 22, 2007
Distro maintainer Brian Brazil Monday announced the release of gNewSense 1.1, a Ubuntu-based distribution containing only free software. It offers developers' tools, support for both the GNOME and KDE desktops, and runs a 2.6.15 kernel.
gNewSense 1.1 hits the web only about 11 weeks after the debut of v1.0 last Nov. 2.
gNewSense is an Ireland-based Linux distribution that is sponsored by the Free Software Foundation and is released without any proprietary and non-free components and with several enhancements, the team said.
The goal of the project is to produce a totally free Linux distribution.
Notably, all proprietary firmware, restricted modules and Ubuntu logos are removed, while the "Universe" repository is enabled by default and several GNU applications, such as Emacs and development libraries, as well as bsdgames and NetHack, are included in the default installation, the team said.
Key improvements in version 1.1, according to Brazil, include:- support for arbitrary meta packages
- added optional support for updates and backports
- added support for multiple live CDs
- produce torrent files for live CDs
- support for tracking mirror freshness
- KDE variant live CD
- a fixed NTPL issue
- enabled eepro100 driver (e100 was non-free)
- recompiled and rebranded Firefox so we could disable the offering of non-free plugins
