Apr. 29, 2004
CPUBuilders has expanded its line of Linux PCs to include offerings for small businesses. Members of Sam's Club (Samsclub.com), Wal-Mart's members-only warehouse store, can go online and select two new models from US $475.
Systems come pre-installed with CPUBuilders' own "Linux for Everyone" operating system. The distribution offers applications for Internet web browsing (Mozilla), E-mail, word processing (OpenOffice.org), spreadsheets, presentations, graphics (GIMP), digital imaging, multimedia (XMMS), instant messaging, education, and games.
Priced at US $475 to US $600, the systems run on AMD Athlon processors. The lower end model runs on the AMD Athlon XP 2700 processor and includes an 80GB hard drive, 256MB of memory and built-in 10/100 Ethernet modem. The higher end machine adds a more powerful processor, the AMD Athlon XP 3000, and has 512MB of memory.
Walmart-owned Sam's Club started offering AMD-powered Linux PCs with Red Hat installed in February 2003 from US $300. Wal-Mart offers a host of Linux PCs online with Linux from Sun, Lycoris, Lindows, Mandrake and SuSE from US $200.
