| Lindows.com release upgrade, adds Internet calling |
Dec. 15, 2003
Lindows.com has announced the release of LindowsOS 4.5 that joins the company's Linux-based OS software with voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) technology, enabling users to place phone calls over broadband internet connections. The new release also boasts improved hardware support, preloaded games, automatic hardware detection, power management features that automatically power down laptops, and the addition of wireless capabilities, claims a company statement issued Tuesday.
Coupling Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) with LindowsOS allows PC users to call other compatible SIP devices, not regular land lines or cell phones. Lindows.com says that customers of its OS will receive a unique number for making calling and accessing enhanced calling features like four-way conferencing and toll free numbers. Using the unique ID, customers can connect any SIP-enabled computer or device.
Pricing for the OS starts at US $60 per copy.
Lindows.com CEO Michael Robertson announced his backing of a SIP-based company, SIPphone in August 2003.
