| WalMart online adds Linux PC with Sun's Java Desktop |

WalMart's online store has added Sun Microsystems' Linux desktop to their selection low cost Linux-based PCs. The retailer is now shipping PCs with Sun's Java Desktop System preinstalled starting at US $300.
In 2002, Wal-Mart introduced PCs with Linux preloaded from "white box" manufacturer Microtel The retailer's website also sells the systems with Linux desktop software from Novell's SuSE Linux, Lycoris, Lindows, and Linare. Industry Linux leader Red Hat rolled out Linux PCs early last year in WalMart-backed Sam's Club member warehouses starting at US $300.
Like other PCs available from Wal-Mart, the Sun-powered systems don't come with a monitor and range in price from US $300 to $700. The PCs have Advanced Micro Devices processors -- the Duron 1.6 MGhz and Athlon XP 2400+ -- and also host 128- to 256- MB of memory, a CD-ROM drive or CD-RW-DVD combination drive, a 40GB - 80 GB hard drive and Sun's software.
Sun's StarOffice Sun's Java Desktop System is available via annual subscription for US $100 per desktop user or $50 per employee for existing Java Enterprise System customers. Sun is offering a 'trade-up program' for users looking to move off their existing desktop. With the proof of purchase of an desktop environment, qualified users will be able to purchase the Java Desktop System for $50.
For general office needs, Sun's StarOffice software provides word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, drawing and database programs that are compatible with Microsoft Office. StarOffice 7 is priced at US $80 retail, with 60-day support.
