| First Fedora 7 Core/Extras test version debuts |
Feb. 02, 2007
Fedora 7 Test 1, the first version to combine the old "Fedora Core" and "Fedora Extras," was released on Feb. 1 by the project team. Fedora 7 Test 1 is available as either an installation or live CD, release engineer Jesse Keating said.
Fedora 7 Test 1 features a GNOME desktop default and a 2.6.19 Linux kernel.
"For this particular release, we only did a Desktop spin of the package collection," Keating said. "We are still fine tuning targeted spins of the collection as part of the merger of Core and Extras."
Key new features, according to the project team, include:- OpenOffice.org 2.2 office suite
- MySQL 5.0.27 database
- SeaMonkey 1.0.7 web application suite
- Thunderbird 1.5.0.9. email client
- GIMP 2.2.13 graphics editor
- amaroK 1.4.4 media player
Keating said the project team will continue the testing and bugfix process through February and March. Fedora 7 is expected to have a final feature freeze on April 5 and to go gold on April 26, he said.
Fedora long has been one of the most popular Linux distributions. By Jan. 8 -- only two and a half months after its Oct. 24 release -- the Fedora Core 6.0 Linux project had clocked more than 1 million downloads, according to the project's leader. That worked out to over nine downloads per minute, or 13,584 installations per day, the project said.
You can download your copy of the Fedora 7 Test 1 live CD for i386 machines (681 MB) or the installable DVD images (2.0 GB) here via BitTorrent. You can also download the distro from the project mirrors, here.
