Chinese Linux distributor Co-Create says it signed a multi-million dollar deal July 25 to use Alacos Desktop Migration Agent -- an automated Windows-to-Linux desktop and user migration suite -- to move 50,000 desktop users from Windows to Co-Create Linux in China and other parts of Asia.
Alacos Desktop Migration Agent automates an enterprise's desktop user's email, data, settings, and preferences from Windows desktops to Linux computers, according to Seattle-based Alacos.
"Alacos' automated desktop migration software allows us to develop desktop migration plans for our clients, knowing that Co-Create and our business partners can implement every migration quickly, efficiently, and successfully," said Cao Dong, CEO of Co-Create.
While Microsoft Vista continues in final development, Co-Create is working with a wide range of corporations and government agencies that will switch thousands of user desktops from Windows 98 or XP to Co-Create Linux, rather than continuing with the Microsoft upgrade path.
After careful analysis of current IT infrastructure, Chinese executives have concluded that migrating from a Windows infrastructure will provide them with a significant competitive advantage, according to Alacos.
Using Co-Create Linux and OpenOffice.org on 50,000 desktops represents a savings of $20 million to $25 million for these organizations, compared to continuing with Windows Vista and Microsoft Office 2007, Alacos spokesman Glenn Thomas said. Hardware savings will range from $40 million to $50 million, Thomas added.
"Across AsiaPac business and government, clients have realized that the best opportunity to move away from an over-reliance on the Microsoft platform is after the launch of Vista, when regardless they will have to spend significant amounts of money to upgrade," said Lionel Koh of Ferosys, the distributor of Alacos software in Asia.
"They can spend a smaller amount to migrate to Linux and open source while at the same time regain control over their internal IT infrastructure," Koh added.
In addition to its Linux-to-Windows migration products, Alacos also offers consulting services for companies and organizations migrating backend and client applications to Linux and is a business partner of IBM, Sun, Novell, and Red Hat.
