Jan. 10, 2005
Sun's Linux-based Java Desktop System (JDS) Release 2 OS is now available as a free download. Following an evaluation period, users may continue to use the JDS OS download, but Sun's free update and security patch service is no longer provided. Sun is also offering a promotional $50 annual subscription.
JDS is a desktop Linux OS based on Novell's SuSE Linux, and includes open-source software components such as the Mozilla browser and Star Office. For a perspective on JDS, read eWEEK's Java Desktop System 2 Executive Summary.
Japan's Information/Technology Promotion Agency (IPA) announced in November that it had selected Sun as part of the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry's (METI) initiative to promote the use of open-source desktops in schools throughout the country. The program is part of METI's efforts to help foster open source development and usage in Japan.
In July, a free website launched by the authors of O'Reilly's Exploring the JDS Linux Desktop by Tom Adelstein and Sam Hiser.
