| Ubuntu-based Pioneer Linux hits the net |
Dec. 08, 2006
U.S.-based Technalign Inc. today announced the inaugural release of Pioneer Linux, a Ubuntu-based, desktop-oriented distribution for home and business users. The distribution is based on a 2.6.17 kernel, and, like Ubuntu's own Kubuntu, features the KDE desktop environment.
Pioneer Linux targets both new and experienced Linux users, the project team said in the release announcement. The product comes in two editions: as a freely downloadable live and installation CD; and as a commercial boxed edition that includes CrossOver Office and technical support.
"The first release is the 32-bit version to be followed immediately by the 64-bit version," the team said. "The community edition includes many features found previously in (TaFusion's) Frontier Linux."
Frontier Linux is a small distribution based on MEPIS code.
Key standard features, as listed by the project team, include:- Firefox 2.0 browser
- Thunderbird 1.5.0.8 and KMail email clients
- cdrtools 2.01.01a03 CD burner with CD-R and CD-RW recorder
- OpenOffice.org 2.0.4 office suite
- amaroK 1.4.3 media player
The free edition can be downloaded here.
The 678 MB iso image file for i386 machines is available for download here (direct link to iso); and the 672 MB version for i686 machines is here (also a direct link).
You can scan the listing of commercial boxed versions of Pioneer Linux here. They range in price from $80 to $110 retail.
