Sep. 05, 2006
The KateOS project team on Sept. 4 introduced a live CD version of KateOS Linux v3.0. KateOS 3.0 Live, released just 18 days after the first stable KateOS 3.0 release, utilizes a 2.6.17.6 Linux kernel and the Xfce desktop environment, just like the regular v3.0 distro.
"It [v3.0 Live] is a great demonstration of our system's possibilities," the Poland-based team said in the release announcement. "It can also come very handy when trying to rescue another system."
The CD contains 2GB of compressed data, including an XFce windowing environment with multimedia and office applications, the team said. Also available in this release, according to the project team, are:- New system and partition rescue tools
- GParted (partitioning tool)
- ClamAV, an antivirus scanner
"All these tools are priceless during a data rescue session after a system crash," the team said.
Key standard features of this release, according to the team, include:- OpenOffice.org 2.0.3
- Choice of SendMail 8.13.7 or Thunderbird 1.5.0.5 email clients
- MPlayer 1.0pre8
- GIMP 2.2.12
- emacs text editor 21.4
The project, originally known as Kate Linux, was founded about three years ago, near the end of 2003, the team said. The first KateOS-branded version came out last Dec. 7, according to DistroWatch. IT is an independently developed, lightweight distribution with some of concepts derived from Slackware Linux.
