| Crash analysis tool project aims to make Linux more reliable |
May 08, 2004
VA Linux Systems Japan K.K. has announced a joint project with NTT Data Corporation to develop a crash analysis tool for Linux in an effort to increase the reliability of Linux.
The group says the software will allow for the retrieval of crash-related data and provide analysis of system failures and conflicts.
Tokyo-based VA says that Linux systems are prone to "deadlock and weaker at pinpointing failures that occur at the interface between middleware, the OS, and hardware." By recording internal data automatically at the time of failure, the project aims to help develop solutions through analysis.
Tetsuya Ueda, president of VA Linux Systems Japan said that the collaboration "will allow us to better meet the needs of the enterprise market."
Most analysis tools offer diagnosis of data related to the Linux kernel today, according to the group. The new tool will record all data -- including application data -- and analyze the causes of complex failures. Information about system conflicts and dependencies will be reported involving applications, middleware, operating systems, and hardware so that preventative measures can be taken.
General availability is targeted for Q1 2005.
