Deploying Novell Linux desktops in the enterprise moves one step closer to reality with the pending launch of the Utah-based company's software due out this Fall, according to Novell executives at LinuxWorld this week. Over the past several months, Novell has been releasing updated products, merging software from its Ximian and SuSE acquisitions that are intended to help IT easily integrate and manage Linux desktops in the enterprise.
Yesterday, CNET's Stephen Shankland detailed a desktop demonstration at LinuxWorld. Shankland says the prototype of the Novell Linux Desktop boasts features of the Gnome-based Ximian Desktop and is optimized for Novell's GroupWise server software for email, calendars, contact lists, and instant messaging.
Novell's vice president of product development and former founder of Ximian, Nat Friedman, recently said that "a day doesn't go by when I don't talk to a Fortune 1000 customer from the financial services market, automotive or others that are not looking at dipping their feet into the Linux desktop."
In May, Novell announced "enterprise-level" support for its line of Linux software including SuSE Linux and Ximian server and desktop products. The following month the company's ZENworks 6.5 was released to help IT staff consolidate resources and reduce the cost of managing Linux -- as well as other OSs -- in the enterprise. ZENworks Linux Management, formerly Ximian's Red Carpet Enterprise, provides secure, scalable and centralized management of SuSE and Red Hat Linux server and desktop systems, according to Novell. Priced from US $130 per user, the software's public beta had more than 15,000 downloads, Novell says.
