| Desktop Linux a "dominant element" in discussions, Red Hat says |
Jun. 01, 2005
Red Hat CEO Matthew Szulik spoke to the press last week, stating that desktop Linux is now a "dominant element in most of [his] discussions," whereas two years ago the subject rarely came up, according to an article at News.com by Stephen Shankland.
According to Shankland, Szulik stated that Linux on the desktop has gained ground against heavyweight Microsoft primarily through OpenOffice.org and Mozilla Firefox, which suggests that applications, rather than intrinsic qualities of the Linux OS, are the key to grabbing more marketshare.
Szulik then pointed to Microsoft's ActiveX, Visual Basic, and Active Directory (which may find a challenger in Novell's semi-OSS eDirectory) as the next battlefronts the desktop Linux movement should look to, reports Shankland.
