| Mac mini plus Linux magic create multimedia machine |
May 16, 2005
Last week, IBM published the first in a series of how-to articles that explain how to turn an Apple Mac mini into a home multimedia machine using Yellow Dog Linux.
The first article spends several paragraphs on the legal hang-ups, most of which won't be an issue for the home user. Those not intending to turn this how-to's configuration advice into a commercial product can skip to the next section and learn the answers to "Why the Mac mini?" and "Why Linux?"
After pitching his platforms, author Lewin Edwards details a Yellow Dog Linux install and config step by step. By the end, you should have a networked Yellow Dog Mac mini with working sound, web browser, and FTP server.
Edwards also thoughtfully includes a list of useful resources, including where to get Yellow Dog Linux, where to get a Mac mini with Yellow Dog pre-installed, a link to an article explaining how to install Debian instead, and more.
