| Getting scanners to work with Linux |
Jan. 26, 2006
More than a few Linux users have become upset because they have trouble making scanners work properly with their systems. Most of the time, however, "the fault doesn't lie with Linux," writes DesktopLinux.com columnist Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols.
Instead, "it's the eternal problem of hardware vendors neither supplying drivers nor the information developers need to write drivers," he continues.
Some companies, like Epson, offer a great deal of support for Linux, while others, like Canon, offer little or no support.
Vaughan-Nichols clues us in to the good work of the SANE (Scanner Access Now Easy) project, and how it offers a universal scanner interface platform that can potentially support "any raster image grabber, such as flatbed or handheld scanners."
"Thanks to SANE, dozens of scanners have at least some support," he adds.
