| Gentoo 2006.0 debuts on a LiveCD |
Feb. 27, 2006
Gentoo Linux Monday issued its first release of the year, Gentoo Linux 2006.0. Leading off the distro's 2006 series, v2006.0 represents improvements across many architectures since the 2005.1 release, team member Tim Yamin wrote in the release announcement on the project's website.
This is also the first release with the Gentoo Linux Installer officially debuting on an x86 LiveCD, which fully replaces the Universal and PackageCD set, Yamin said.
Major highlights in the release, according to the project team, include:- 2.6.15 kernel
- KDE 3.4.3
- Gnome 2.12.2
- XFCE 4.2.2
- GCC 3.4.4
The LiveCD also features a fully-fledged Gnome environment. Later releases will include KDE support as well as a new LiveDVD, Yamin said.
The PPC64 team has made significant improvements in its release media, Yamin said, thanks largely to a recent hardware donation from IBM to the team that greatly helped.
The CDs feature 64-bit kernels and 32-bit userland apps and tools rather than the previous pure 64-bit environment, Yamin said. Optimized stages are available for the G5 and POWER5 processors, making Gentoo the first distribution optimized for POWER5 out-of-the-box, Yamin added.
Gentoo 2006.0 is available for free download (697 MB) from the project's bouncer system, download mirrors, or via the BitTorrent server.
