May 15, 2002
Sun Microsystems has made a donation to the Ministry of Education (MOE) of the People's Republic of China that has the potential to make StarOffice 6.0 (branded "StarSuite" in Asia) the office suite of choice in schools throughout China. Sun's StarOffice 6.0 donation authorizes unlimited reproduction and distribution to the students, teachers, and administrators of the educational institutions governed by the ministry -- which may represent as many as 300 million users, according to Mike Rogers, Sun's VP and General Manager for Desktop and Office Productivity Software.
Additionally, Sun and the MOE have agreed to cooperate closely on "developing a competitive software industry in China that produces top-quality software for domestic and global markets," according to Sun's announcement.
The official donation ceremony took place on March 27, 2002 at the Beijing International Conference Center, at which time Kim Jones of Sun presented a gold master CD of StarOffice 6.0 to China's Vice Minister of Education, Professor Zhao Qin Ping.
