| Glowing praise for SuSE Pro 9.3 |
May 07, 2005
eWEEK Labs recently reviewed Novell's SuSE Professional 9.3, and pronounced it a superior choice for both desktops and notebooks, for both average users and developers."
Built off the 2.6.11 Linux kernel, SuSE Pro 9.3 comes standard with both KDE 3.4 and Gnome 2.10 -- both offering noticable, but not revolutionary, improvements over earlier versions according to eWEEK.com's Jason Brooks. SuSE Pro 9.3 also ships with a number of applications, including OpenOffice.org's not quite yet released version 2.0, which Brooks feels make SuSE Pro 9.3 a good choice for "mainstream desktop or notebook deployments."
Brooks asserts that developers and system administrators may appreciate the inclusion of Mono and a number of Mono-based apps like Beagle (a search tool), Tomboy Notes (a "personal wiki"-like note taking app), and F-spot (an image management app). Also, SuSE Pro 9.3 includes Xen, virtualization software that allows the user to run multiple instances of Linux.
Overall, eWEEK Labs reviewers found SuSE Pro 9.3 worked well out of the box and required less configuration tweaking than other distributions -- even the notoriously difficult hibernation mode on notebooks worked flawlessly.
"Novell Inc.'s SuSE Linux Professional 9.3 is an excellent general-purpose operating system," writes Brooks. "In fact, when it comes to combining leading-edge Linux and open-source software, Version 9.3 is the most polished and complete Linux distribution eWEEK Labs has tested."
