Qualsoftest Corporation has released preliminary tests evaluating Desktop Linux distributions versus Microsoft Windows XP from a end user’s experience. The goal of Qualsoftest’s independent tests was to demonstrate the usability of Linux on the desktop for end users.
As Linux has dominated the server industry in recent months and marched into embedded devices, analysts and industry observers are projecting that Linux desktops will continue to emerge as a low cost alternative to proprietary options such as Windows. In large part this is due to the present economic climate, interoperability concerns, and increased emphasis on IT managers to get a ROI.
But what about the viability of Linux as an alternative to the Windows platform? Enhanced desktop environments, productivity applications, a growing number of enterprise applications being ported to Linux, and software products that link Linux apps to Windows-based systems all make a move to Desktop Linux possible. Is this all enough to compel companies to ditch its Windows desktops in favor of Linux? Distributions evaluated by Qualsoftest included Red Hat 8.0, LindowsOS 3.0 and Microsoft Windows XP. The preliminary set of benchmarks reviewed ease of installation, x, and usability.
