| Damn Small Linux delivers first v3.2 release candidate |
Dec. 14, 2006
The first live CD release candidate of Damn Small Linux 3.2 was made available this week, only two weeks after the release of version 3.1. The v3.2 release candidate sports a 2.4.26 kernel and the Fluxbox window manager in a tidy, 49.8 MB package.
Damn Small Linux is a thumb-drive-sized Linux distribution that, despite its minuscule size, strives to be a functional and easy-to-use desktop.
Key new features, as listed by the project team, include:- Updated madwifi-ng modules
- Updated BusyBox with greater than 2GB file support
- New Cron: a Perl cron, with new boot option "cron" and toggle from control panel
- New boot option: "checkfs"
- A simplified MyDSL structure using the level 1 default auto-scanned/mydsl directory or user specified level one directory which contains extensions
- New mkmydsl: simplified custom ISO maker now even easier than before and supports new MyDSL layout and works for both isolinux and syslinux CD versions
- Updated MyDSL to support direct downloading to all supported and mounted drives and directories
- Added volume setting to persist via .umix
DSL boasts a nearly complete desktop that includes XMMS (MP3, and MPEG), an FTP client, a links-hacked web browser, spreadsheet, email, spellcheck (US English), a word processor, three editors (Nedit, nVi, Zile [emacs clone]), Naim (AIM, ICQ, IRC), SSH/SCP server and client, a web server, calculator, and USB support. It soon will have PCMCIA support, as well, the team said.
You can download the DSL 3.2 RC1 iso (49.8 MB) from the main site mirror here, or from here (direct link to the iso).
