Aug. 26, 2005
OpenSUSE.org has announced that SUSE Linux 10.0 Beta3, codenamed "Bangalore," is available now for download and is ready for testing. Beta4 is due to be released on Sept. 1, and the RC1 (first release candidate) version is set for availability on Sept. 9, according to the OpenSUSE website.
In Thursday's announcement, Project Manager Adrian Schroeter described the highlights of Beta3 as the following: "A PowerPC version has been also uploaded. It might not have the same quality as the i386 or x86_64 version, but it is safe to install if you read this description from our ppc team before. Lots of the most annoying bugs have been fixed. The ftp tree contains YUM meta data. This can be used with YaST or any other installer using YUM repositories. (It is not officially supported for now)."

The OpenSUSE Project, a community program sponsored by Novell and launched at LinuxWorld earlier this month, is aimed at providing free, easy access to SUSE Linux and promoting its use worldwide.
In DesktopLinux.com's most recently concluded reader survey of Desktop Linux distribution usage rates, Mandrake and SUSE were essentially tied for first place at 17.6 and 17.5 percent, respectively.
