In this Gartner 'Viewpoint' on CNET, analyst Michael Silver weighs in on the decision by Sun Microsystems to charge for StarOffice 6.0 and the 'threat this poses to Microsoft Office.' Silver writes . . .
"Gartner believes that Sun will set a retail price for StarOffice of less than $100, and volume pricing will run $25 to $75 -- all considerably less than the prices for Microsoft Office."
". . . Unless Microsoft makes major concessions on licensing and pricing for Office, by the end of 2004, Gartner believes that StarOffice may gain as much as 10 percent of the market at Microsoft Office's expense."
