CNet's Stephen Shankland reports that Sun will release an update to its Linux-based Java Desktop System (JDS) on Tuesday, introducing new management and programming tools.
Sources told CNet that the new JDS will include "an automated software update service" and utility that allows the remote control of systems. A configuration manager will also be introduced into the product, according to the report, allowing administrators to set privileges of system users and groups of users. Developer tools in JDS are said to include the Java Studio and NetBeans.
Management tools for Linux systems are increasingly finding their way into the market, as demand for Linux in the enterprise increases. Open source management tools are available to administer Linux systems quickly and efficiently across an organization. Commercial products that are integrated with popular distributons include Red Hat's Enterprise Network and Ximian's Red Carpet for SuSE and the Ximian Desktop.
Last month Xandros introduced a beta program for their xDMS technology to help enterprises deploy, configure, update and manage thousands of networked users of Linux desktops using remote management capabilities.
Sun touts benefits and cost advantages of its Linux-based desktop systems. The company teamed up with managed service provider EDS in December to help speed the delivery and adoption of the Java Desktop System for customers and partners worldwide with special pricing and other incentives. Sun also began shipping JDS on PCs from retailer Walmart.com in March to target the consumer market. By adding management capabilities and software updates to the product, Sun is making a migration to Linux even easier for organizations.
Novell, IBM, Oracle, CA and other major software makers have affirmed a commitment to open source Linux in the past few weeks with the introduction of products for the market, through open sourcing software products, and internal strategies to use Linux desktops in-house.
Sun has said in recent weeks that they plan to release a version of JDS for its Unix-based Solaris operating system mid-year.
