GoblinX goes gold with Premium 2006.1 LiveCD
Feb. 06, 2006

The Brazil-based GoblinX Linux Project Monday announced a LiveCD version of GoblinX Premium 2006.1 edition. Based on Slackware, GoblinX aims to offer a pleasant and functional desktop with standardized icons and themes that make it easy for novice users to learn about available applications, the project said.

Advanced users will appreciate GoblinX due to Slackware's stability and flexibility, according to the project. Users are able to control everything about the system in a simple, fast way, the team says.

GoblinX Premium 2006.1 is almost twice the original size of other GoblinX releases, the team said. With it, users get everything from previous versions plus a number of new features -- including new tools that enable users to convert the LiveCD into a bootable OS on their hard drives.

Key features, as listed by the project website:
  • Linux kernel 2.6.15
  • Contains all basic libraries and command line applications
  • Xserver
  • A full list of base packs can be found here.
  • KDE 3.4.2, Xfce (03.1.defX.mo), Fluxbox 0.9.13, Gnome ppp 0.3.23
  • Abiword 2.4.1, Firefox 1.5, GAIM 1.5.0
  • GIMP 2.2.8, Gnumeric 1.6.1, Gphoto2 2.1.6, XMMS 1.2.10, among others
  • Enlightenment 0.16.7.2, Enscript 1.6.3
  • Optional: NVIDIA Accelerated Linux Driver set brings accelerated 2D functionality and high-performance OpenGL support to Linux x86 with the use of NVIDIA graphics processing units (GPUs)
  • The ATI Proprietary Linux driver provides hardware acceleration for 3D graphics and video playback. It also includes support for dual displays and TV Output
A complete list of application packages is available here.

The CD-only release can be ordered online from On-Disk.com. On-Disk.com says it returns 54 percent of the $9.99 sale price back to the project to support GoblinX development.
