A look at Project Looking Glass
Oct. 18, 2004

Sun Developer Network looks at the inspiration behind Project Looking Glass (LG3D), the open source 3D desktop project for Linux. Integrating 3D ideas into the desktop, piece by piece, Sun engineer Hideya Kawahara says that in 2003 he began devoting several hours per day along with weekends and holidays to develop a protoype of his view for a 3D desktop. Taking his vision to Sun management in June 2003, Kawahara launched the project with strong support from company management. The project debuted at the JavaOne Conference in 2004 and has subsequently been released to the open source community, has spurred subprojects, and now runs on Fedora, Red Hat, and SuSE Linux desktops in addition to Sun's JDS.
